THE CONCEPT OF INFORMATIVENESS AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE FOR THE RHETORICAL STRUCTURE OF THE SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE: A BULGARIAN-ENGLISH COMPARATIVE STUDY
Abstract
The theme-rheme organization of the sentence is a new look at the text structure, which allows us to explain a fundamental function of the language of the research article - its informativeness, i.e. the degree of prominence of the text elements. According to the representatives of systemic-functional linguistics, there are two types of thematic organization- one with an unmarked and another one with a marked topic. The study presents an analysis of the theme-rheme organization of the research article by examining the rhetorical structure of its constituent parts - Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion. The basis of this structure is an understanding of the rhetorical move as the main vehicle of the flow of information in the research article. For the purpose of the study, two corpora of medical research articles in Bulgarian and English were compiled accordingly. After analyzing the moves in the rhetorical structure of the articles from the corpora, the present study establishes that the theme-rheme organization is achieved through related hyperthemes, structured through hypotaxis and parataxis relations, with linear thematic connections also occurring at the local level, especially in the argumentation of a given concept.
