Abstract

The paper highlights the issue of surface water quality according to

microbiological indicators. The research was conducted in the upper reaches of the Danube River

basin (the Siret and Cheremosh rivers) within the territory of Ukraine. The main microbiological

indicators were: total microbial count, coli-index, number of lactose-positive intestinal bacteria),

number of coliphages and the presence of pathogenic enterobacteria. Based on many years of

research, a classification of the quality of surface waters of the specified watercourses was carried

out. It was established that the surface waters of the studied region according to microbiological

indicators belonged in the vast majority to 2-3 quality classes. The inclusion of microbiological

indicators in national legislation, in terms of monitoring surface waters, is an urgent need of the

hour.
