Abstract

This article examines the development of quality schemes in agriculture within

the European Union and their potential for Bulgarian producers. It presents the main European

schemes, including Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), Protected Geographical Indication

(PGI), Traditional Specialty Guaranteed (TSG), Mountain Products (MP), and organic farming. The

benefits of these systems are analyzed in terms of enhancing agricultural product competitiveness,

consumer protection, and support for small and medium-sized farms. Opportunities for Bulgaria are

highlighted, particularly the potential to leverage traditional, organic, and mountain products, such

as cheeses, honey, fruits, and wines, to access premium markets both within the EU and

internationally. The article also discusses challenges in implementing quality schemes in Bulgaria,

including administrative and bureaucratic barriers, limited experience and awareness among

producers, and the need for effective marketing strategies. Emphasis is placed on farmer education,

integration of sustainable and ecological practices, and the use of EU funding programs. In

conclusion, quality schemes including PDO, PGI, TSG, MP, and organic certification represent a

strategic tool for adding value, enhancing growth, and increasing the international competitiveness

of Bulgarian agriculture, while simultaneously promoting the preservation of traditions, sustainable

development, and biodiversity.
