Abstract

Working poverty remains a significant challenge within the European Union, raising critical questions about the adequacy of minimum wage policies and their impact on low-income workers. This article delves into the complexities of defining and measuring the working poor population, considering both individual and household factors that contribute to in-work poverty. The study explores the correlation between minimum monthly wages and the prevalence of working poverty, examining the implications for social inclusion and economic well-being across the EU. The analysis also considers the role of social welfare programs and labour market regulations in mitigating the risks associated with low-wage employment. Specifically, it investigates whether higher minimum wages lead to reduced poverty rates among working individuals and their families. Furthermore, the research examines the heterogeneous effects across different member states, acknowledging the variations in national contexts. Ultimately, the findings emphasize the need for multifaceted policy approaches that combine adequate minimum wages with complementary social safety nets. In conclusion, addressing working poverty requires a holistic strategy tailored to the specific economic and social conditions within each EU member state.
