Abstract

This report discusses the importance and functions of the commodity exchange in the modern global economy, with a brief emphasis on the increasingly close interrelationship between commodity markets and financial instruments markets. The idea is that commodity markets are of great importance to the global economy and trade today because they could not be seen as strictly separate from markets trading financial instruments, as there are increasingly close links between the two, effectively leading to transfer of financial resources invested in financial markets to the real economy.
